Tours - Where are we off to?

Follow the route made famous by the international launch of the BMW R1150 GS Adventure. Cross the ancient battlegrounds of Shaka, ride among the giraffes and antelope through two extraordinary game reserves, and explore the Zulu footpaths of the Makatini Flats where no other vehicle can go. And then there's the spectacular Lake Sibaya and the forests of Barberton.

Approximately half of this tour is on dirt roads with a few sandy patches to test your off-road riding skills. Therefore, off-road enthusiasts with a little more experience riding in these conditions will most enjoy this tour.

day 1/9

Welcome to South Africa.

We'll meet you at arrivals at Johannesburg International airport, and take you through to our depot, to hand over the motorcycles to all participants. By lunch time we'll leave the buzzing metropolis behind, to take a drive to Amersfoort, the home of the BMW Off-Road Academy in South Africa.

day 2/9

The fun starts

300km from Johannesburg at the headquarters of the organisers, Country Trax, near Amersfoort in Mpumalanga Province. Riding this particular 1,200km route off-road in 7 days demands a high level of riding skill (and a reasonable level of physical fitness). The riding, therefore, begins with an off-road training course that lasts all day. The terrain becomes more difficult each day, but routes have been carefully planned to allow riders to grow in confidence and enjoy the adventure.

day 3/9

Up and over

the southern African watershed via the mountain passes of the Middleveld, over Dirkiesdorp and Lüneburg, past Paulpietersburg, we take the long, winding road to Bivanedam and finally the Ithala Game Reserve. We will stay overnight in the wilderness area - by far the most beautiful bushveld of all southern Africa's wildlife parks and reserves.

day 4/9

There is "a game drive" before breakfast, then we take a private road through the sugarcane fields that snakes down to the Pongola River to our final destination, the Pongola Game Reserve. There will be a ferry crossing, amazing wildlife and a sunset cruise on a riverboat to watch the hippos play.

day 5/9

Through the mountain pass to Jozini and then across the Makatini Flats - always taking the hidden tracks and forgotten byways along the Pongola River. You will also see the real Zululand. Finally, we'll arrive at Lake Sibaya, close to the Indian Ocean and not far from the Mozambique border.

day 6/9

Mbazwana - Pongola

We are leaving the largest freshwater lake of South Africa behind, and take a wide swoop through the forests and backroads to Mbazwana and finally on to the spectacular Pongola Game Reserve.

day 7/9

Piet Retief

To Piet Retief for breakfast, then we ride along the edge of Swaziland, watching the changing face of Mother Nature, to Oshoek, Josefsdal, Bulembo and our destination of Barberton.

day 8/9

Into the mountains

Into the mountains and never-ending forest roads around Barberton. This includes the Fourteen Streams road, which crosses the river (you guessed it) 14 times. We explore and play among some of the most spectacular scenery in Africa and spend another night at Barberton.

day 9/9

Back to Johannesburg

Participants have the whole day to return to Johannesburg with a leisurely drive through the best that Mpumalanga Province has to offer.
